Karen “Duff” Duffy

After a run as an MTV VJ in the 1990’s, Karen Duffy became the face of Almay Cosmetics and the spokesperson for Revlon’s ‘Charlie’ perfume. She is an actress and producer, known for “Dumb and Dumber,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and “Blank Check.” She is also a pain patient advocate and author of the New York Times bestselling memoir, Model Patient: My Life as an Incurable Wise-Ass.  In her new book, Backbone: Living With Chronic Pain Without Turning Into One, Duff shares her message of living a great life while living with an incurable disease and intractable pain.   

She is a certified hospital chaplain, a former Ms. Coney Island Mermaid Queen and a member of the Alliance for the Ethical Treatment of Pain Patients and a board member of the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research.  Her work has been featured in more than 100 top tier media outlets including The New York Times, Oprah Magazine, NBC, HBO and the Wall Street Journal.

Marv Turner, Cinematographer/Director

Marv has spent 24 years traveling the world and capturing its beauty, hunger, poverty, evil, and strength, through a camera. Documentaries to longer format marketing, educational and public awareness messages, to shorter productions. Marv is an Emmy Award, 7-time TELLY Award, Aurora Award and Davey Award recipient for his videography work.  

Marv has traveled the world and filmed in Bosnia, Spain, Ireland, Mexico, El Salvador, Israel, Uganda, Italy and The Congo, just to name a few locations. He was lead camera on "HIV Godesses," which debuted in the New York City Film Festival.

Peg Thiele, Writer/Producer

As a partner of Yellow Dog Productions, Peg brings the many parts of video production together creating compelling messages–viewers think, feel and take action. She's been connected to production for more than 20 years as on-camera talent, writer and producer. We're happy to partner with Peg.

Nicole Hemmenway, Chairman, U.S Pain Foundation

Nicole is an author, motivational speaker and patient advocate. Her book, "No, It Is NOT in My Head: The Journey of a Chronic Pain Survivor from Wheelchair to Marathon," details her struggles and triumphs in dealing with complex regional pain syndrome, a debilitating neurological disorder.

Nicole founded Heroes of Healing, a support group network, and directs the INvisible Project, a magazine and gala that highlights the courageous stories of people living with pain.

In September 2015, Nicole was featured in the centerfold of USA Today as part of a chronic pain campaign, and in 2017, she received the Unsung Hero Award for her work in the pain community.

Nicole lives in the Bay Area with her husband, three sons and two lively animals.
